Kevin
Easter Cops For Kids
We
still vividly remember, as if it was yesterday, the details of a
14-year-old runaway killing Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin
Easter on January 8, 1996. From his tragic death has evolved an
innovative program linking area law enforcement and Big Brothers
Big Sisters of Sedgwick County through Kevin Easter Cops For Kids.
With the outstanding participation and involvement of area law enforcement,
this program has continued to grow, serving over 600 at-risk youth
each year. In addition, this program is used as a model by many
Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the country. With the full
support of Sedgwick County Sheriff Gary Steed, Wichita Police Chief
Norman Williams, the Easter Family and the law enforcement community,
this program provides crime prevention programs and recruits law
enforcement as mentors for the youth in the Big Brothers Big Sisters
program.
In
order to fund this program, each year area law enforcement come
together the last Saturday in February to bowl in the Kevin Easter
Cops For Kids Bowl. The bowl continues to grow and leads all Bowl
For Kids' Sake events. In the past eight years, over $750,000 in
pledges and sponsorships have been raised in order to fund this
program. This is a wonderful and exemplary commitment to the at
risk youth in our community.
