Welcome to BBBS of Norton County

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Norton County was “born” from a group of concerned citizens who felt at-risk children could benefit from having a mentor. In 2001 a plan took effect and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Norton County became an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas, thus joining BBBS of America, the largest and most effective one-on-one mentoring program in the world. .The formal opening of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Norton County took place in 2001 and now in 2006 we celebrate five years of mentoring the youth of Norton County.

Throughout the years studies have shown mentoring is a successful means of helping children overcome many of the obstacles they face.

In 1995, Public/Private Ventures found that youth matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister are:
46% less likely to start using drugs;
27% less likely to start drinking;
52% less likely to skip a day of school;
33% less likely to engage in violent behavior.

Then, in 1999 an evaluation of BBBS agency school-based mentoring programs found that:
64% of the students developed a more positive attitude toward school;
58% were better able to express their feelings;
64% had higher levels of self confidence
62% were more likely to trust their teachers.

It has been said, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and the friendships formed through mentoring strengthen not just the child, nor the volunteer, but becomes the cement to bind a community. We invite you to join our program and build a community.
