Dove Hunt at Cheney Lake

September 1, 2002

The week prior to the opening of Dove Season, 10 Littles attended a Dove Hunting Clinic, hosted at Michael Murphy & Sons Sporting Clays facility. Marc Murrell, wildlife biologist from Kansas Wildlife and Parks gave a talk on doves, their migration patterns, and how to hunt them. Marc also included a session on hunter safety while in the field hunting doves. Following the talk, everyone went to the 5-stand field to sharpen their shooting skills.

On opening day, two Littles along with their Bigs and ten Littles on the waiting list paired up with Bigs-for-a-Day volunteers and traveled to Cheney Lake. Kansas Wildlife and Parks had prepared a dove field and reserved it especially for use by BBBS for the opener.

Upon arriving at the fields, a short safety talk was held, reminding everyone of the need to be sure and see plenty of daylight between any doves coming in before taking a shot. Safe gun handling rules were reviewed and safety goggles and hearing protection were passed out to all participants. The morning light came as Bigs and Littles spread out through the field to wait for the first flights of doves.

While the shooting never did reach a fever pitch, there were enough doves flying to keep the morning interesting.

Volunteers from the Ark Valley Quail Unlimited Chapter, Ducks Unlimited, and Pheasants Forever served as Bigs-for-a-Day for those Littles waiting for a match. The Ark Valley QU Chapter furnished ammunition for all of the shooters and had breakfast catered to the field, once the birds had stopped flying for the morning.

Here's the crew!

Enjoying a great morning in the field, QU Volunteer Garth Bloom and Little John Brown are patiently waiting for the next flight of doves to come winging by.

The Ark Valley Chapter of Quail Unlimited hosted a post-hunt breakfast for all of the hunters. Nothing like an early morning hunt followed by a hearty breakfast!

Big Jeff Christensen and Little Josh Meliza are all grins as they search the skies for more doves.

DU Volunteers Scott Mueller and Tim Kiernon share a relaxing morning in the field with Little Dana Schweers. Scott's retreiver was kept busy throughout the morning, fetchin' 'em up!
