BBBS of Sedgwick Co. matches go fishing at the Z Bar Ranch

June 6, 2003

WICHITA, KS. — 8 Matches and a couple of tag-alongs from Sedgwick Co. BBBS traveled to the Z Bar Ranch southwest of Medicine Lodge, KS to enjoy a great morning of fishing. Despite being rained on almost the entire drive to the ranch, the weather was great for the entire time we spent fishing.

Ranch manager Keith Yearout welcomed the group, which included Byron Schrag and the film crew from Dianmond Adventures. After a short safety talk (watch out for rattlers!), everyone loaded up for the short drive to the pond. Along the way, Keith stopped to point out a golden eagle that came from the Topeka Zoo. It will be released on the ranch as soon as it can fly. We also were fortunate to see some lesser prairie chickens booming on the edge of a prairie dog town. This species is being watched very carefully as their declining numbers have almost put them on the endangered list.

The first Little to cast a line in the pond had a strike from a 3 lb. bass almost as soon as his lure hit the water! And it went like that for all of those fishing until a small front came through. But event then, bass, catfish and bluegill were being reeled in with regularity.

Just about the time we needed to head for lunch, a light sprinkle started, which only helped encourage folks to load up and head in for a buffalo burger lunch.

All in all, everyone enjoyed some great fishing and a great day in the outdoors!

Big Shea Carpenter (SCORE volunteer) is shown with a nice bass landed by her Little Sister Melinda Tran. With Shea and Melinda are Shea's two sons.

Big Sister Terrilee Jones (SCORE volunteer) and her Little Sister Donna Black are all smiles showing off their catches. They really did bring in bigger ones!

Little John Brown watches his Big Steve Hewitt show how it's done with a fly rod. Steve is a member of the local Flatland Flyfishing Club.

Little Dana Schweers is showing off his first catch of the day, a nice bass. Dana caught many more like this during the morning…his favorite lure…a green lizard!

Four of the matches are seen here, enjoying the morning on the scenic Z Bar Ranch. The overcast skies threatened rain all day, but not a sprinkle was seen until it was time to head for lunch!

Wildlife is abundant on the Z Bar. Just over the dam, this deer was seen leaving the party. We spotted antelope, badgers, prairie dogs, golden eagles, lesser prairie chickens, pheasants and bobwhite quail while on the ranch that morning.

Wrapping up the mornings fishing, Little Zach van-Y and Chad Heineman are seen here showing off their catch. Zach's stringer was weighed at over 30 lbs…and he threw back a bunch of 'em!

Everyone enjoyed a buffalo burger lunch after the great morning fishing.
