Z Bar Ranch Deer Hunt

September 27 & 28, 2003

The Z Bar Ranch located southwest of Medicine Lodge, KS, owned by Ted Turner, invited KS BBBS to send 10 matches down to hunt does during the 2003 Youth Deer Season. Encompassing 42,000 acres, the Z Bar Ranch is located in the scenic Gyp Hills of south central Kansas and offers some of the best deer hunting in the state. For some scenery most folks don't think of when they think of Kansas, click here.

On September 27, four matches and one unmatched Little met in Medicine Lodge to watch the Peace Treaty Paegant Parade before heading to the Z Bar Ranch. For four of the Littles, this was their first opportunity to hunt deer. One of the matches was from BBBS of Reno County, one was from BBBS of Sumner County and the others were from BBBS of Sedgwick Co.

After sighting in the rifles and spending some time practicing their marksmanship, the matches were taken to blinds that had been provided by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

While all hunters saw quite a few deer, only one match brought home a deer. One Little did manage to hit a doe, but after falling, it got up and ran off and was not found. Little Charlie O'Halloran had a shot, but declined to take it, not being confident that he could make a clean kill. This kind of sportmanship and hunting ethics is exactly what we want to see from all of our hunters!

The next day, another group of four matches traveled to the ranch. Again, only one match was successful in bringing home a doe. Buddy Sheets got his first deer ever, and the grin couldn't have been any bigger!

Keith Yearout, manager of the Z Bar Ranch, has invited BBBS to come back to the Z Bar for the deer rifle season in December. Check back then to see some more great photos of our Littles in the field!

KS BBBS wishes to thank Keith Yearout and the folks at the Z Bar Ranch for providing us with this wonderful opportunity to enjoy the great Kansas Outdoors!

KS BBBS also wishes to thank Casey Woodburn and Richard Waite for loaning BBBS firearms for the Littles to use on the hunt! Without the support of great sportsmen like these, we wouldn't be able to provide our Littles and matches with the opportunity to hunt.
