Pheasant Hunting
Training
October
11, 2003
Billy Jackson of Flint Hills Hunting Preserve hosted
ten Littles for a morning pheasant hunt on his controlled shooting
area. With volunteers from the local Quail Unlimited chapter assisting,
Littles were treated to a controlled hunt, to give them a feel
for how a hunt for wild pheasants might go. QU members brought
their bird dogs, KDWP furnished the firearms, and everyone had
a great morning!
Taking 3-4 hunters at a time into the field, along with either
their Big Brother or a volunteer Big for the Day, Billy was able
to show the Littles how a pheasant hunt would be run. All of the
Littles participating managed to bring home a bird!
While some of the hunters were in the field, the remaining hunters
were given shooting instruction, using an automatic trap and targets
provided by KDWP. It wasn't long before some of the hunters were
able to not only consistently break the target, but also break
a piece of the target with a second shot.
Billy complimented all of the hunters on their conduct in the
field. It seems everyone paid close attention in their hunters
education class and kept their firearms always pointed in a safe
direction and kept their shots in their own zone of fire. Congratulations!
