BBBS of Sedgwick Co Youth Upland Hunt
The Fifth Annual BBBS of Sedgwick Co Youth Upland hunt was held
on November 1 with volunteers from the local Quail Unlimited and
Pheasants Forever chapters volunteering as Bigs-for-a-Day for unmatched
Littles joining several matches on an exciting hunt near Cunningham,
KS. Eleven Littles, including four unmatched Littles had the opportunity
to be the first in the field on land enrolled in Kansas Department
of Wildlife and Parks Walk-in Hunting Area program. And the birds
were plenty!
The first field walked didn't measure up to the last two, only
yeilding two coveys of quail and a couple of hen pheasants. The
second field had roosters coming up and Josh brought his chance
to bag, with a nice retreive by his Big's lab pup. A second bird
was knocked down, but it ran off and despite the efforts of four
dogs, it wasn't found.
The last field hunted was by far the best of the day. At least
25 pheasants roared from the cover, and beat a fast retreat from
the hunters. Two nice sized coveys of quail burst from the tree
rows, giving everyone a start. Despite the opportunities to bring
one down, only Dana managed to bring home a bird from that field,
his first pheasant!
BBBS wishes
to thank the volunteers from the Ark Valley Chapter of Quail
Unlimited and the Ringneck Rustlers Chapter of Pheasants
Forever for mentoring the unmatched Littles. Thanks also go out
to Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for providing loaner
shotguns. Without assistance from these organizations, we wouldn't
have the opportunity to Pass It On!
