Patrol West Dove Hunt!

September 1, 2004, Wichita, KS

Quoting from an article in the Wichita Eagle, "Every minute he's on patrol, Wichita police Officer Andrew Bantz hopes he never finds a child with a gun. But on Wednesday evening Bantz handed a shotgun to 11-year-old Jesse Duckens, showed him how to load and fire the 20-gauge. Rather than on a Wichita street, they were north of town for the opening of dove season, participating in a hunt sponsored by a dozen police officers and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sedgwick County."

The dove hunt on opening day capped a series of four events involving police officers from Wichita Patrol West and Littles from BBBS of Sedgwick County. BBBS of Sedgwick County has a long history working with local law enforcement agencies to not only match waiting Littles with police officers as their Big, but to build a better image of law enforcement for the Littles. The Kevin Easter Cops for Kids program teamed with the Pass It On program to involve more officers with more of our Littles.

On September 1, 14 police officers were joined by 8 waiting Littles to take to the field for an evening dove hunt. Everyone met at the BBBS offices where Bigs were matched with Littles and a review of their Hunter Education class was given to prepare everyone for a safe hunt. While the doves weren't all that cooperative, everyone had a great time and is looking to spend more time in the field this fall.

BBBS of Sedgwick County and the Pass It On program offer our sincere thanks to everyone who made this happen!

These hunters enjoyed the training hunt, brining birds to hand!

Bigs and Littles enjoyed a fun morning fishing at the FOP Lake

A nice crowd attended the Dove Hunting Clinic and had a great time learning about doves and honing their shooting skills.

Patrol West Officers were matched with Littles for an opening day dove hunt.

Patrol West Officers Andy Bantz and Chris Barratti join Mike Christensen and Randy Wells from Kansas BBBS in accepting a check for $1,000 from Janice Morgan and Wal-Mart!
