European Pheasant Shoot
March
21, 2004
What
began as an idea from the Kansas Sport Hunting Association about
three weeks earlier blossomed into one of the most fun European
Pheasant Shoots ever held at Flint Oak hunting preserve near Fall
River, KS. KSHA sponsored and promoted the event, several KSHA members
donated the pheasants; Flint Oak donated the facility and staff;
and over 80 participants turned out to support the Pass
It On program and give some Littles brothers (and
some Big Brothers as well) a memory to last a lifetime.
The
moment attendees entered the Lodge with its vaulted ceilings, European
decor and fine wildlife art, they knew it was going to be an unforgettable
morning. The Big Brothers took their Littles to the Mallard meeting
room for a review of safety instructions by the Flint Oak guides.
Then everyone piled on the enormous Hunt Wagon for a scenic ride
in the crisp spring air to the European site where a large campfire
was waiting to chase the chill. The retrieving dogs were straining
on their leashes with excitement and the 80+ hunters were laughing
and telling "war stories", adding to the surreal feelings
many youngsters were enjoying for the first time. Their eyes were
as big as the legendary saucers!
Finally,
all shooters were located in their blinds and waiting with eager
anticipation when the Hunt Horn sounded and the air exploded with
pheasants driven to flight. Shotguns echoed and the startled Littles
suddenly realized that the shoot had begun. That morning, these
young men learned much about the traditions and camaraderie that
hunting creates. They held their trophy birds high as they posed
for photo memories to take home. Following the shoot, all enjoyed
a huge hunter's lunch donated by the Flint Oak supplier. It was
truly a "magic moment" for all, and a truly "feel
good" event for the many folks who donated time, effort, and
money to make it a success. One can only imagine what the Littles
dreamed about that night, or how the tried to describe their experience
to friends and relatives.
One
Little summed it up on the ride home, commenting, "I'd take
a nap on the ride home, but I'm still way too excited!".

Before heading to the field, the Flint Oak staff did a
quick rules and regulations talk to make sure the hunt was
safe for everyone. |

Once the safety talk was finished, everyone loaded up
in the vans and Hunt Wagon for the short drive to the field. |

Once the Hunt Horn blew, the shooters were busy! |

Little Eric, Big Volunteer Mike Hayden, Little Dylan,
and his Big Brother John Green. |

Everyone
took a break at the halfway point, sharing tales of shots
made and missed and enjoying the company of good folks.
|

The
retrievers were kept busy all morning long as the hunters
did well!
