Youth Turkey Hunt
Hosted
by Bell Wildlife Specialties
April 8-10
On
Thursday, April 8, 2 matches and 4 waiting Littles traveled to
Harveyville, KS to hunt turkeys during the Kansas Youth Turkey
season as guest of Dan Bell and Bell Wildlife Specialties. Byron
Schrag, host of the Diamond Adventures outdoors show, was along
to film the event for his TV show later this year. John Moore,
Kansas State Chairman for the National Wild Turkey Federation,
was along as a volunteer Big for the Hunt.
An
early-to-bed crew was anticipating a great hunt for Friday. Stories
were told of all the birds that had been seen and all were anxious
to head to the blinds early in the morning and everyone watched
video of the exciting hunt from the previous year, just to get
the blood pumping! For some of the crew, the 4:30 AM wake-up
call couldn't come early enough! A quick breakfast and everyone
hustled to the field to be there well before sunrise.
The
hunters were divided into 3 groups and taken to different locations
near Harveyville.
Little
Eric was the first to bring home a bird, bagging a young jake
on the Friday morning hunt. Volunteer Byron did the calling and
brought the jake within range. Eric did the rest, shooting his
first turkey!
That
afternoon, Little Ron, accompanied by his Big of eleven (11...!!!)
years, got his first turkey as well. Ron shot a nice 2-3 year
old bird with an 11" beard, weighing a little over 18 lbs.
John claimed that you could see the smile beaming on Ron's face
from over 300 yards away!
The
Saturday morning hunt didn't yeild any birds, but everyone enjoyed
the time in the field with great companions!
Dan
Bell graciously invited us back again next year!
