Fishing Grouse Creek w/Cowley College
April
17, 2004
Saturday,
April 17, James Fry and his friends and scholarship students at
Service Learning Central, Cowley College, co-hosted a Big For A
Day fishing event with Mr. and Mrs. David Walker at Grouse Creek
Cabins in Cowley County.
Eight waiting
littles from Cowley County joined with volunteer Bigs and one traditional
Match from Sedgwick County to fish Grouse Creek. It was warm and
windy, the fish were persnickety, and only a handful of green and
orange-spotted sunfish were caught.
Several Bigs
were seen sporting fresh sunburns as the day progressed. Little
Sara Cooper – Alsup caught the first and biggest fish to show
the guys how it’s done. Cameron Burr was champion- tackle-snagger-upper
and the wettest fisherman in camp, while Brett MacMillan was seen
feeding worms to the captive fish that had lost their appetites.
Justin Coffey
took most fish and most different kinds of fish caught honors. Ryan
Joyner was our avid angler of the day. He persisted in spite of
the wind and heat, even fishing during lunch! Was your line ever
out of the water Ryan?
Dakota Graham
caught the first orange-spotted sunfish and became Captain “fish-tender”
thereafter. Brothers Alec Coffman and Justin Robins didn’t
catch the trophy fish but sure looked like golfers on Mr. Walker’s
golf range.
Jake
Acosta was crowned “science guy” and along with Mica,
impressed us with their ability to identify creek bank tracks of
coyote, deer, dog, raccoon and man! Jake finally confessed to having
learned the tracks from his volunteer Big, Garrett Royston. Good
job.
Oh
yeah guys, the big bird soaring high above with wings held in a
V-shape was a turkey vulture (sometimes called turkey buzzard)!
Thanks to the Walkers for the invitation and feeding us and to James
Fry and his crew of volunteers for making it possible. Thanks to
all for a fun outing.

Little
Ryan made the most of his time on the creek, with his line
in the water all day long. |

It
was a sunny, warm day along scenic Grouse Creek. |

Bigs
and Littles enjoyed the day along the creek. |

Gene
was kept busy all day long, helping Bigs and Littles alike. |

No,
really, it was this big! |

Unfortunately,
most of the fish caught were about this size! |
