Fishing with the Hays BASS Anglers

May 8 , 2004

On Saturday, May 8, 2004, the Hays Bass Anglers Association hosted a “Big For A Day” fishing trip for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County. Two years ago, on behalf of the association, Ed Bennett, the president, contacted Big Brothers Big Sisters and expressed an interest in having a fishing trip for Little Brothers on the agency’s waiting list. The event was sponsored by Pass It On, a program of Big Brothers Big Sisters through which outdoor mentors introduce boys and girls, who have an interest in the outdoors, to wildlife conservation.

This year, the Hays Bass Anglers Association was able to provide enough bass boats and fishing gear to take twelve boys fishing at Cedar Bluff Reservoir. The anglers, including Ed Bennett, Nate Brown, Terry Cunningham, Bill Deeds, Gene Gilreath, Gordon Gorton, Keith Harmoney, David Heffel, Jeff Pfannenstiel, Ferrill Standage, Darrel Von Feldt, and Klint Von Feldt, were volunteer Big Brothers for the day. The children met up with Bass Angler members at the Westview Church parking lot at 8:00 a.m. From there, everyone made the trip to Cedar Bluff Reservoir in Ellis. The group was able to fish for three hours, just long enough to think of some whopping fish stories! Around noon, the fishermen came off the lake to eat lunch, cooked compliments of the staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters. The group returned to Hays at 2:30 p.m.

This is the second fishing event the Hays Bass Anglers Association has hosted for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County. The children had high hopes for their day of fishing, and it was clear their expectations were surpassed! This outing was as fun, exciting, and successful as the first trip. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County plans to partner with the Hays Bass Anglers Association for many fish stories to come!
