Ray Newman Shooting Clinic
July
8, 2004
Having
read about the Pass It On program in the NRA American Hunter
magazine, Ray Newman, from Oklahoma City, picked up the phone and
called, wanting to get involved. Ray is the Team USA Captain for
the Senior Veteran Sporting Clays Team, representing the USA in
competitions world-wide.
The
first opportunity presented itself at the Kansas State Sporting
Clays Championships, held July 9-11 at Claythorne Lodge. Ray spoke
with Frieda and Sam Lancaster, who generously offered to provide
traps and targets for Ray to host a shooting seminar for Littles
and Bigs. Bigs and Littles from BBBS of Crawford County and four
additional Littles from Sedgwick County were treated to an afternoon
of shooting instruction from one of the best. (Ray won the Freedom
Cup and the non-resident championships!).
Joining
Ray was Mike Epperson from Miami, OK to help coach the Bigs and
Littles with their shooting skills.
Ray
began the afternoon with a little bit of classroom instruction,
followed by time on the range, busting clays. Bigs and Littles alike
enjoyed the afternoon of shooting and came away with a better understanding
of just how it can be done!
Thanks
to Ray and Mike for taking time from their schedules to spend an
afternoon with BBBS. And a big thank you to Claythorne Lodge for
making time and resources available in the middle of their busiest
tournament of the year. Special folks like these make it possible
to Pass It On!

Ray
started off the afternoon's clinic with a short "Chalk
Talk".

Ray
illustrated the proper stance and way to hold the shotgun
while waiting for the target. |

Ray
watches while Little Alonzo shows off his shooting skills. |

OK,
Demario isn't little, but he is a Little. Ray gave Demario
some pointers that really helped his shooting. |

Mike
Epperson is assisting Little Morgan. Thanks to Mike's help,
Morgan was busting 'em with the best of 'em!. |

It
was an attentive crowd the whole afternoon. Bigs and Littles
alike paid close attention while Ray and Mike were showing
how it's supposed to be done. |

Even the Bigs benefited from some one-on-one instruction. |

Instruction
like this is hard to come by! Ray is actually holding Little
Jalynn's arms and helping him swing the shotgun on the target,
then telling him when to pull the trigger. |

Little
Morgan had just busted his third target in a row. As you can
see from Ray's smile, he was probably more excited about than
Morgan!
