Youth Deer Hunt on Z Bar Ranch, 9/25-26

September 25-26, 2004

The Youth Deer Season in Kansas saw 12 Littles have a chance to harvest a deer the last weekend of September. One match was hosted by K&K Outfitters of Newton, KS, one match attended the Harper Co Deer Hunt hosted by KDWP and six matches and four waiting Littles hunted deer on the Z Bar Ranch. Four of the Littles harvested does that weekend!

President and CEO of Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters, Nick Mork, and his Little Sammy FINALLY got a chance to join the Pass It On crew for a hunt! Also joining the hunters on the trip to the Z Bar Ranch was Taz Ridley, Vice President of the Safari Club International. Taz was matched with one of our waiting Littles for the hunt, and his expertise proved out as Little Matt got a deer on his first hunt!

While sighting in the rifles prior to the hunt on 9/26, Taz commented on the fact that we could really use a spotting scope to determine how well the shots were being placed (as opposed to running 100 yards down and back to see where the hole was!). After getting back in the office the next week, what showed up? Yep...a nice new spotting scope from Bushnell. Taz had spoken to the great folks at Bushnell and told them of our plight and Bushnell stepped up and provided a scope! We're looking forward to putting that to good use! Thanks Taz and Bushnell!

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters wishes to thank all of the volunteers that made the weekend a successful one, including Keith Yearout and the staff at the Z Bar Ranch, Brad Odle and all of the volunteers who put on the Harper Co Youth Deer Hunt and Keaton Kelso of K&K Outfitters. Thanks for helping us Pass It On!

Big Brother Jeff Christensen, formerly with the USMC, helps Little Matt with his marksmanship.

All of the Littles spent time at the range, making sure they were comfortable with their firearm and confident of their shots.

Big John Green helps his Little Brother Dylan get familiar with his rifle

All aboard the Hummer for a ride to the blinds. This is the crew for the 9/25 hunt.

Here is the crew for the 9/26 hunt, minus Taz Ridley who is busy snapping photos.

Waiting Little Amber is shown with her first deer. Not only was this Amber's first deer, it was also her first hunt ever!

Volunteer Dave Marble helped Little Eric get a doe on his first deer hunt. You could see Eric's smile from 1/2 mile away!

Little Matt is showing off his first deer. Thanks to Taz Ridley, Matt enjoyed a successful first deer hunt!
