Youth
Turkey Hunt
April 24-25, 2004
In
Pennsylvania, this year’s spring gobbler season opened with
its first youth turkey hunt allowing youth to take to the woods
a week before adults. Excited at this opportunity, BBBS staff arranged
for waiting “Little Brothers” from Elk and Mckean Counties
to participate in this special hunt. Carl Loeffler, a local sportsman
and Big Brother, hosted this PIO event at his camp in Clearfield
County where several outdoor mentors joined him in matching 4 “Littles.”
On Friday, “Littles”
spent time with mentors developing their shooting and calling skills,
scouting sites and participating in a fun evening calling contest.
“Littles” arose early on Saturday and spent the morning
in the field learning first-hand from their mentors the skills of
being a turkey hunter. For most of the Littles, it was their first
turkey hunt.
All of the matches
were fortunate enough to hear and call in turkeys and two were even
able to get a shot. Although no turkeys were taken, one “Little”
excitedly shared, “I don’t even care that I didn’t
get a turkey, I had a great time anyway.” From experiencing
the thrill of the outdoors and learning about nature to capturing
a view of Pennsylvania’s Elk to making mountain pies over
the campfire, everyone had a terrific Saturday.
Upon its conclusion,
everyone was raving about this memorable two-day event. And to further
highlight another success this PIO program, it encouraged the commitment
of at least two outdoor mentors to become a “Big Brothers.”
Plans are already underway for a fall event.
