About Malisa's Hope:

Malisa’s Hope is Big Brothers Big Sisters’ faith-based mentoring program. Children are matched with faith-filled adults in the Malisa’s Hope program. Malisa’s Hope Bigs share their faith with their Little and encourage their Little in their own faith journey.

Malisa’s Hope is possible because of the memorial gifts received in honor of Malisa Caffey, who was killed at age 19 by a hit-and-run driver. Malisa loved God, she loved her family, and she believed in serving others. All Malisa’s Hope matches are funded out of the memorial, other private donations, and funds raised by the Church Bowl.

Except for the emphasis on sharing their faith, Malisa’s Hope matches are just like all other matches. They can be traditional Community-based or Site-based (Bigs in Schools) matches.

Big Brothers Big Sisters serves a community need by putting caring role models in the lives of children who need a supportive friend; helping them stay off drugs, in school and out of trouble. The agency currently has more than 1,100 active Big/Little matches, but because more than 1,000 children were referred to us in 2003, hundreds of them continue to wait, including the more than 400 waiting for a Malisa’s Hope Big.

As a Malisa’s Hope Big, you agree to:

  • Support your Little’s church fellowship or include them in your own church family.
  • Share your faith with your Little, and help them in their own faith journey.
  • Teach your Little the importance of helping others.

As a Malisa’s Hope match, you and your Little:

  • Receive a journal to help you share your faith experiences.
  • Are provided opportunities for special match activities.
  • Are provided opportunities for service projects.

Monthly Highlights:

Fishing Activity
18 Littles from St. Mark's United Methodist church were treated to a day of fishing at Eagle Lake in Bel Aire. On Saturday, July 23, members of the church volunteered to spend the afternoon with the children as a part of the Malisa's Hope program.

Summer Fun at the FUNdamental Learning Center
When you think of summer school, fun is not often the word that comes to mind. However, Karen Crow is out to change that idea. Crow was inspired to start a reading class at the FUNdamental Learning Center this summer just for BBBS students. All of the students are a part of the Malisa’s Hope faith-based program at BBBS. They are either currently matched with a Big or are on the waiting list. Crow is heavily involved with the Malisa’s Hope faith-based program at BBBS. She wanted an opportunity to help children who have reading difficulties catch-up over the summer. She also felt called to share her faith with them.

Crow volunteered her time for five weeks to help fifteen local children with their reading and to grow in their faith. The classes met everyday. In this particular class of seven girls, Crow picked up each child at their home in the morning, drove them to the center, taught class and then took them home.

When asked what part of class the students liked best, they all enthusiastically replied, “EVERYTHING!”

The smiles on the faces of these seven girls lit up the small classroom.

“The girls have actually asked for homework,” Crow said.

This partnership between the FUNdamental Learning Center and BBBS will hopefully continue into the fall. “We are trying to collaborate with organizations that work with young children because we want to help those that need a little extra support,” said Jan Davis, Director of Operations for the FUNdamental Learning Center.

Youth Group Wins Trip
The Holy Cross Lutheran Youth Group raised nearly $3500 to benefit the Malisa's Hope program at BBBS. For their efforts, the group won a trip to the Horn Creek Ranch in the Rocky Mountains of Westcliffe, Colorado, plus a whitewater raft trip with Noah's Ark Rafting.

The Spiritual Gift of Faith
“ God gives the spiritual gift of faith to all those that ask. Because you are a Malisa’s Hope match, faith is a spiritual gift that you posses. But how do we pass that gift on to our Littles? We can tell them how much we believe in our Lord. And we can tell them how much He means to us. But how can we concretely show our Littles that we truly believe in our Lord? One of the best ways I know is to trust God. Let your Little know that you live your life with God in control. Everything you have and everything you are is a gift from Him. All aspects of your life (work, play, your relationships, your worship) are all a reflection of your thankfulness to God for His wonderful gifts to you. Help your Little to know that he/she can trust God in all things.” - Jim Griffin, former Director of Malisa's Hope

Match of the Month: Charles Eby and Dalton Gripp
Charlie and Dalton, a 7th grader, have been a community-based match for over a year. They enjoy doing lots of things together, including canoeing, kayaking, biking, tennis and basketball. They have also taken up geo-caching, which is similar to orienteering, except you use a GPS. One of the most important things Charlie and Dalton do together is go to church each Sunday. They each go to their own Sunday School class, and then the whole family meets for the church service. After church Charlie and Jean usually take Dalton to lunch where they will often discuss what they learned in Sunday School or in church. Dalton keeps Charlie on his toes by many times asking about things that were not totally clear in the sermon or Sunday School. Recently, the pastor talked about the “still small voice” in each of us. Dalton did not really understand how to hear God talk to a person. So, Charlie talked about how he “hears” God speak to him in his heart. Charlie told Dalton how, as Charlie prayed, God asked him to do more volunteering, and how God had told him that Dalton was the Little Brother to pick. Dalton is seeing first hand how a Godly man depends on his Lord for all aspects of his life. Dalton has become part of Charlie’s family, both at home and in his church family. Dalton appreciates all the fun things he has done with Charlie, and how they volunteer together and how he can talk to Charlie about God.

Ice Cream Social
As you can see from the picture, we all had a great time at the Malisa’s Hope Ice Cream Social. There were pies, brownies, and the ice cream came in vanilla, peach and cookie dough/butterfinger. Pax the clown performed magic tricks and made all sorts of balloon animals. Devin won the pie-eating contest, but Calvin and Zeke were right on his heals. Everyone got in the act after Pax showed us how to “shoot balloons”. Thanks to all who brought the wonderful goodies.

2005 Church Bowl Update:

The 2005 Malisa’s Hope Church Bowl is almost complete. We are adding a second Church Bowl at Northrock on Saturday, June 4th, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. to accommodate some churches who were unable to bowl previously and to help us reach our goal. We still could use about 24 more teams in an effort to raise an additional $12,000. If you are interested in being a team captain for your church, or if you know of a youth, a Sunday school leader, or other church member from your church or another church who may be interested in being a team captain, please call Daryl Handlin at 263-3300.

Thank you to all those who coordinated for your church, those who bowled, gathered pledges, and for those who donated thus far. At this point, your work and generosity will allow nearly 40 children to be matched to a caring adult who will help them to find a deeper relationship with our Lord.
